Folic acid is needed for cell division and cell formation and is an important building block for healthy embryonic development. Healthy folate levels contribute to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy and play a role in cell division.
Folic acid as folate is often only found in small amounts in our food. 89% of German women have an insufficient intake of folic acid. The intake of folate from daily food does not guarantee that the recommended additional 400μg of folic acid during pregnancy is achieved. Therefore, folic acid should be taken as soon as you decide to have a baby.
Normally, the body is able to convert folic acid into folate, but what many people don't know is that every second woman has a so-called MTHFR defect, which means that the body cannot utilize folic acid. This is particularly risky when trying to conceive and during pregnancy.
Studies show that it makes sense to start taking sufficient folic acid 2-3 months in advance. For pregnant women, the DGE recommends an additional 400µg of folic acid per day. Our Caneafem 2-phase products are specially tailored to the different stages of pregnancy and ensure optimal nutrition when trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and also during the important breastfeeding period.
What many people don't know: every second woman has a so-called MTHFR* defect! The consequence of this defect is that the absorption of folic acid is not guaranteed, i.e., women with this defect are not adequately supplied despite taking folic acid tablets. The risk of a neural tube defect (spina bifida, cleft palate) and also an increased risk of a heart defect in the unborn baby remains despite folic acid medication.
In this case, you should look for the bioactive form of folic acid: Extrafolate-S or Metafolin are examples of such bioactive forms of folic acid. If you want to be absolutely sure whether you have an MTHFR defect, consult your gynecologist.
* MTHFR = methyl-tetrahydrofolate reductase defect (polymorphism)
Folic acid is converted in the body into folate, or more precisely into MTHF, through several metabolic activities. Only this form can be utilized by the body. Bioactive folate (=MTHF) is present in Extrafolate-S® or Metafolin®*. These forms can be processed directly by the body. Extrafolate-S® is chemically identical to Metafolin®*.
* Metafolin® is a registered trademark of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.
Extrafolate-S® is manufactured using a patented process and is a registered trademark of Gnosis, Italy.
The DGE recommends 400 µg (micrograms) in addition to your diet.
